Every Star Wars Tv Show Ranked

04/05/2023

Last year on Star Wars Day, I released a list ranking every Star Wars movie. For this year's Star Wars Day (the day which I like to call "Nerds Come Out Of Their Shells To Say 'May The Fourth Be With You' Day"), I thought it would be sensible to release a list ranking every Star Wars tv show. I have watched every single episode of all nine Star Wars tv shows to date at least once. That is 337 episodes in total (if my count is correct).

For this list, I will be ranking all tv shows, animated and live-action. However, I will not be including any Lego Star Wars tv shows. And as much as I love Tales of the Jedi, I also won't be including any Star Wars shorts such as Tales of the Jedi and the Star Wars: Rebels shorts.

#9: STAR WARS: VISIONS (2021-, 1 season (so far)) - 2/10

I've said this before and I will say it again many times in the future: Star Wars: Visions is the worst thing to come out of Star Wars since the infamous holiday special (in fact, Visions may be even worse than the holiday special). This is an 'interpretation' of Star Wars. That means that the tv show isn't part of the official Star Wars canon; the show is simply 'inspired' by Star Wars. That in itself isn't a bad idea, but mix that with anime (which I am not a fan of) and you get Star Wars: Visions: the worst thing to come out of Star Wars since the holiday special. I thought that I might have despised this show so much purely because of my distaste for anime but talking to some other Star Wars fans who actually like anime, they similarly did not like the show. But for some strange reason, they decided to make a season 2. (That second season comes out today. I do have to say that from the trailers, this season looks better than the first. I will be watching this season as well so be sure to keep an eye out for my review.)

#8: OBI-WAN KENOBI (2022, 1 season) - 6/10

In a recent article, I used Obi-Wan Kenobi as an example of why Star Wars needs to slow down. Star Wars is currently releasing a lot of content and much of this newer content is suffering as a result of the lack of attention to each project (to hear more of my thoughts on this dilemma, read here). Obi-Wan Kenobi is a clear example of this. The show moved very slowly and it felt like we were constantly repeating what had happened in the last episode. This show was originally supposed to be a standalone movie. I think the story would have worked much better as a movie rather than the 4 and a half hours of content we got. It's pretty unusual for a Star Wars tv show to put me to sleep.

#7: ANDOR (2022-, 1 season (so far)) - 7.25/10

Fortunately, the next tv show released in 2022 was a bit of a step up from Obi-Wan Kenobi. Andor built off what we saw in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story; arguably the best Star Wars movie of all time. The tv show was an extremely realistic and gritty story and the show took a step away from the usual target audience of kids as did Rogue One. This show is the most 'adult' thing we've seen in Star Wars which I think is quite a positive move as long as all future Star Wars shows don't follow this pattern. In saying this, my biggest problem with this show was every episode felt unresolved. Additionally, the show will be very hard to rewatch due to the length and slow pace of the show. However, I applaud the creators for trying out something new for Star Wars, even though it didn't sit right with me personally.

#6: THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT (2021, 1 season) - 7.75/10

Boba Fett is one of my all-time favourite Star Wars characters so this show was destined to be successful in my eyes. Unfortunately, this show wasn't quite as amazing as I had hoped. The character had become more of a crime boss than a bounty hunter. Additionally, the show was as much about the Mandalorian character who has his own separate tv show instead of about Boba Fett. However, what makes this show slightly better than Andor is that something actually happened in each episode. Each episode dropped some huge bombshell or hinted at some character coming in the next episode. This show had a good way of ensuring that the audience came back for more (and this wasn't just because the audience didn't get enough last time). Not to mention, the show tied in with other Star Wars media bringing in characters from previous shows, movies and even books! (You can read my full review of The Book of Boba Fett here.)

#5: STAR WARS RESISTANCE (2018-2020, 2 seasons) - 8/10

Star Wars Resistance is the underdog on this list and not very popular amongst Star Wars fans. However, I believe that this show is better than some of the other, more adult-orientated shows. The show has a clear target audience which is young kids. This explains why it isn't popular among many older Star Wars fans. However, both The Clone Wars and Rebels started as a 'kid's show' and the audience grew with the show. Additionally, the show is set in a period of Star Wars which hasn't had many pieces of media outside of the movies. Unfortunately, the show was cancelled after only two seasons and won't ever get to the height of Star Wars: Rebels or The Clone Wars.

#4: STAR WARS: THE BAD BATCH (2021-, 2 seasons (so far)) - 8/10

The Bad Batch had a bit of an advantage over the other shows on this list. The show is a follow-on series of the incredibly popular The Clone Wars. The show is essentially Star Wars: The Clone Wars seasons 8 and 9 with characters and stories being carried from that show. Although the first season didn't quite match the success of The Clone Wars, season 2 was certainly an improvement on the first.

#3: STAR WARS: REBELS (2014-2018, 4 seasons) - 8.75/10

I wrote a whole Compared review comparing the next two tv shows on this list (read that here). Star Wars: Rebels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars are very similar series and it was very difficult to choose which of the series was better. In the review, I talked about how Rebels is more consistent in quality, more rewatchable and phenomenally deals with emotional moments. However, I somehow find myself loving The Clone Wars more than Rebels and I'm not sure what specifically causes this.

#2: STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS (2008-2020, 7 seasons) - 9/10

The Clone Wars is only popular among certain Star Wars fans. I find that the series is most popular with those who grew up watching the series, or those who love 95% of content released by Star Wars, like me. This series started as a kid's show filling in the gaps between Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. However, throughout the seven seasons of the show, the episodes gradually grew darker targeting the older audience who were kids when the show first came out. This show has some pretty rubbish episodes. However, these episodes were the ones aimed at the younger audience. Plus, the best episodes of the show are some of the best content in Star Wars.

#1: THE MANDALORIAN (2019-, 3 seasons (so far)) - 9.5/10

There is hardly anything within the Star Wars franchise that isn't controversial. However, I find that one of the least controversial things in Star Wars is The Mandalorian. The show is generally loved by all Star Wars fans. The Mandalorian was the first live-action tv show. It follows a Mandalorian bounty hunter in a dark and gritty outlook on Star Wars. This show was completely different to anything ever seen in Star Wars. Unfortunately, the third season, which only had its finale a couple of weeks ago, wasn't quite as good as the first two seasons. I found it to be a bit of a disappointment and wasn't as spectacular as we know the show can be. However, we know that there'll be at least one more season so hopefully the show picks back up again.

It doesn't look like Star Wars is planning to slow down anytime soon so this list will probably become inaccurate very soon with all the new shows coming to the streaming platform Disney+. In fact, the second season of Star Wars: Visions came out today so this list is already inaccurate. However, as of the 3rd of May 2023, this is my ranking of every Star Wars tv show.
